Hello!
Thanks for lemmy.today. 🙇 It’s great!
Mainly I was just wondering: is it normal for one’s lemmy account to slow down as the number of subs goes up? Currently, I’m subbed to almost 200 communities. When I load my home page at lemmy.today, the page always loads in almost 10 seconds.
My home page is set to Subscribed
and Hot
.
Does anyone know if there’s anything I can do to decrease the homepage load time?
I’d been wondering about that, as I’ve been seeing slowdown sometimes too, as my count of subscribed communities rises. It looks like it’s not the backend, but the frontend. If you use the Alexandrite UI rather than the default Lemmy Web UI, it doesn’t appear to experience the same slowdown as the subscribed community count rises. @[email protected] has kindly installed that as well, so you can choose from it or some of the other alternate UIs in the sidebar.

EDIT: One other factor that might be impacting performance besides subscription count: I understand that there are a lot of not-very-well-written scrapers who have a lot of money for bandwidth driven by entities trying to acquire content for AI training who have recently been bringing down servers. It could be that lemmy.today is being pounded by a bunch of them. It sounds like a number of mbin instances have recently disallowed anonymous access because of the severe load created by them.
In the past few days, I’ve been seeing exceptionally slow performance with the Lemmy Web UI, including probably-load-related errors (50X HTTP errors) and I wonder if that might be a factor.
I don’t know if sticking lemmy.today behind CloudFlare or Anubis or something would help.
Probably the best option, yes. I like photon, its pretty fast also. :)
