    Despite the details in the link, I’m having trouble visualizing how the spark gets from the flint to result in a burning candle poking up.

    Was there some kind of gunpowder wick that’s no longer present?

      I think the pan is primed with gunpowder like in an ordinary flintlock gun.

      … which seems a lot of work for a candle, but so, I suppose, is making an entire ornate pistol-lighter.
