This doesn’t invalidate your point, but DF is still under active development. The game has been worked on consistently since the early aughts.
Adding more info, it just got released on Steam a year back, as a paid version with actual graphics. You can get the free ASCII version from the website still, AFAIK.
For anyone curious, the learning curve is obscene even with graphics instead of ASCII.
