i finally received my crowdfunded copy of Earthborne Rangers, which due to its environmentally friendly goal, made all their cards without the plastic core cards usually have in order to spare the environment. they’re all floppy and fragile, so they definitely need sleeves. only… there’s around 1300 cards.
buying cheap card sleeves from china would run me around €16 plus import duty, but all the ones i can find in local stores are like €5 for 100… that’s a lot of money. and i don’t even know where those are produced.
so, any recommendations on where to get sleeves? preferably with some rigidity if that’s a thing that exists? i think the cards are like 88x63mm.
Edit:
Turns out Arcane Tinmen, from Denmark, make some of their sleeves in-house! so Dragonshield sleeves are indeed european, except the really cheap ones.
Check out Arcane Tinmen’s sleeves. They also produce Dragonshield sleeves for standard size playing cards and card games, think Flesh and Blood and Magic the Gathering, but they also have an assortment of sizes for boardgames and non-standard size card games that would likely run you cheaper than Dragonshield… Afaik, they’re from the Netherlands, can’t comment on where the sleeves are produced, though, possibly China too.
Another option would be Katana sleeves by Ultimate Guard. They’re a little cheaper than Dragonshield, have nice quality and shuffle feel (from what I’ve heard), and Ultimate Guard is from Germany. Again, can’t comment on where they are produced, but I imagine most sleeves are probably made in China.
an update: i checked the packages of dragonshield i bought and they do say “made in denmark” on them!
That’s awesome - wouldn’t have expected that! How many did you end up getting? And how expensive was it?
I got 200 of the AT-11821 “non-glare clear”, with a matte front and a textured back, which are awesome but way too expensive at like €26 for two packets. then i got 600 of the AT-60205 “clear/non-clare common standard”, with a glossy front and a slightly less translucent matte back, which… also cost €26, for six packets. so way better value, but not as nice.
…actually, looking at the packaging side by side, the 60205s are made in china. darn.
That’s a shame but at least it’s a company that’s from Europe, right?
Also didn’t expect you to find those sleeves for that cheap. Are those 60-sleeve packs or 100-packs?
all of them are hundreds. specifically the 11821s were 135SEK (€12.10) each and the 60205s were 59SEK (€5.29) from another store, so i miscounted a bit
That’s a pretty good deal then, damn
you think? i thought it was expensive…
that’s a second recommendation for dragonshield :) seems like that’s the way to go then. i think i can get by cheaper by not sleeving every card, with 1300 of them most are not regularly used.
What’s the footprint of the sleeves? Seems that the creators kind of messed up on that one.
No clue where you can buy them, though. I doubt these are produced in Europe, so China or diy are probably the only solutions.
not sure i understand the first question, sleeves are sold by the measurements of the cards they fit. there are 88x63mm sleeves, it’s like the most common size. i just want to know if there are brands made here.

Playing card sleeves?

So the game producer reduces their environmental footprint, but because of that, customers have to buy plastic sleeves.
My question is: what is the environmental footprint of these sleeves? Because if it’s higher that the original one, that’s pretty stupid.
But anyway: as commented, I doubt that there are any European manufacturers doing that. So you’re only options are likely either to make them yourself, or buy Chinese ones.
Note that even the ones in your local shop are likely made in China.
ooooooh, i gotcha. carbon footprint.
people did say that to them at the start, but i think it’s more about the process of putting all the stuff together. you need different chemicals to laminate the two substances together. and since not everyone sleeves their cards and only some cards actually need sleeves, i think the total footprint is a lot lower.
