The non-definitive 2014 edition has already been free on Epic, not sure how different this one is

Is it actually a bad game or just an unworthy successor? Or I guess to put it another way, what would you think of it if it wasn’t calling itself Thief?

At the time, the 2014 game was a big departure from what made the original 2 so much fun. Where the original games were more true sandboxes, this one was a bit more on rails and overall less fun. It might be worth a revisit a decade later though, I’m interested to check out what makes this “definitive”.

This comment makes it seem like I guessed correctly

Steam already has the Master Thief Edition, which is the same total content which has been available since 2014. The only changes I see are that GOG bundled it into one download for the game + DLC and renamed the bundle to Definitive Edition.

So basically not much! Still, I might give it a look if the price is right.
