From my basic understanding of gut science, the bacteria that do the actual digestion for you grow and multiply based on what you eat. So if you’re a professional athlete and you eat a diet tailored for performance you’ll have more bacteria for digesting protein and carbohydrates. If you’re a normal schlub like us you’ll have a mix of stuff depending on what you tend to eat.

You cam shift your gut flora but it takes years and years of work to do but fecal transplants basically put a whole package of the bacteria you want directly into your gut kick starting that shift if you’re feeding them the stuff that they want.

I’ve read about this sort of thing for trying to cure various gastro-intestinal conditions like crohns but not specifically for performance gains. Sounds possibly legit but as with all “miracle treatments” potentially complete bullshit magic beans.

I was like that until I discovered i had coeliac disease in my mid 30s. Once I stopped eating gluten and my gut repaired, I put on weight and had to start paying attention to what I eat like a normal person. Enjoy your superpower while it lasts.

Years and years is an edge case. Within a year or so you’ll notice the changes. Changes I’ve personally experienced include cutting out sugar and substitutes and completely losing my sweet tooth within a few months, and quitting meat and after about a year I could tell whenever I accidentally eat it from the gastrointestinal discomfort.

The thing is you gotta commit to it.

Ok, but like… Couldn’t they isolate and identify the bacteria strains and then make them fresh? Maybe 2 or 3 generations removed from direct poop? And like wash your hands between handling the poop and making the pill? Or does that defeat the purpose?

The first part is not feasible, since the microbiome has thousands, if not tens of thousands, of distinct species, we aren’t at a point where we could individually isolate, analyse, and reproduce all of these strains successfully.
