i have a project where i need to use a windows machine to mess with a luckfox lyra. it seems the tools are only on windows. ive gotten in the weeds too many times trying to configure a vm or wine in the past, so im hesitant to take that approach. i just decomissioned my old nas (old dell) so im thinking ill just load it up with a windows and just use that.
i know there’s things like reactOs, but im wondering if there’s some kind of “de-microsofted windows” build that exist. or if i should try to use something ancient like win7 or something.
im new to hardware tinkering, so maybe there’s just a good guide i cant find that explains how to use wine for this purpose. otherwise i just want to find a debloated windows if it exists.
thanks
Get the LTSC IoT version of either Windows 10 or 11
As the other poster pointed out, LTSC IoT is as it good at it gets. You’ll be spared some otherwise mandatory apps, but you’ll still get tons of crap and be forced to deal with massive software bloat and slowdown. You’ll probably be able to do whatever you’re trying to do (assuming your old hardware meets required specs and has the up-to-date drivers), but just be aware there’s no such thing as a “fast” Windows OS that can run up-to-date stuff.
I’ve never heard of luckfox lyra, but I am somewhat amazed that tools would be windows-only, super strange.
the tools provided by the manufacturer are windows only. im sure there may be some ways to work around it with serial stuff or whatever, but im new to hardware tinkering in this regard, so i dont want to open up too much of a rabbithole, i just want to jump in and be able to follow guides one to one
Fair enough, no I totally get it. Hope you can get a Windows going and get tinkering, because it sounds hella fun

ActionRetro just did a video running Tiny11 on a Sun server from 2005 (early AMD Opteron x86-64). Maybe try that?
