Oh, he wasn’t joking, he was just lying.
He might have honestly believed that was true. It was always a lie from a realistic perspective but narcissism is weird like that. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he thought he was capable of negotiating peace instantaneously.
No he wasn’t joking. He just doesn’t understand how anything really works. He thought he could just order Ukraine to cave in and it would happen. Like he was ordering a huge order of mcdonalds in for a high brow meal.
also he’s downstream of russian propaganda. russia says the war in Ukraine is NATO’s war. so Trump’s plan to bring peace to Ukraine was simple: just stop fighting. what he didn’t account for was the operational reality in Ukraine that who’s fighting is Ukrainians who are defending themselves from a russian initiated genocide.
I don’t believe for an instant that anybody’s ever sincerely thought he was joking. Anyone saying this is not conversing in good faith, but I doubt that sort of thing surprises anyone reading comments on fediverse posts.
