On an unrelated subject, what types of lasers and rated power destroys image sensors?
22 cal break action air rifles are like 80$, and I’ve shot mine through 16 gauge steel. Less effort, widely available, and an easy tool for resistance.
If you get caught with one, lots of people have pellet guns. If you get caught with a homemade laser, they know it was you, and it’s a crime just to possess one.
A crime to possess a homemade laser? I’m pressing X on that one.
Yeah that one is a bit citation needed. I was looking into making a laser a while back, and kept bumping into regulations about certain power levels being considered a destructive device. This is especially problematic if burnt out cameras are being investigated, and you just happen to have a laser gun in your backpack.
A handheld slingshot has 1/2 the velocity of a .22 load and the projectile is about 10x the mass of a .22 bullet. Short range accuracy is very high with a small amount of practice.

Was rhetorical. Any green pointer or other of dubious rating directly from China via amazon eBay or aliex is more than capable. There is an IR filter in most cases. UV does not pass through most normal glass. Green is right in the sweet spot of wave lengths passed.
I’d like to see how effective that could be in a real application, but the problem with that is should we be wrong, the camera watched you try.
It is an analog circuit with a sensitivity range and extreme space constraints where there is no way to protect against this. The only way to protect is by filtering in front of the sensor and that will only reduce the image quality. It is made with a margin that can handle around 1.5 times the brightest day. A typical nuisance overpowered pointer is far brighter.
Discharging any firearm, especially at government property is a much bigger citation.

As an aside, based on some replies, I think I’ve been misunderstood about the air rifle. I mean an overpowered BB gun, not a real gun. There’s no point in making that much noise when a heavy pellet can do the same damage with no noise or permit.
Which also reminds me, if anyone were to be interested in an air rifle, the heaviest round pellets won’t break the sound barrier. Sometime the light or standard weight pellets will go supersonic and sound like a real gun. Scared the hell out of myself plinking in my backyard.
