My favorite is stuff that’s western animation studios working with eastern animation studios to make some really unique and weird animation!
I understand why some people are tired of anime that all looks the same, but yeah, 90% of western television is a bunch of shows that are all written and shot the same. It’s the whole 90% of everything is crap thing.
Like I don’t see people complaining about the numerous fucking shows that cribbed Rick and Morty’s style like The Lower Decks or Solar Opposites, or fuck, I know there’s another one. They all look the damn same and it’s not even an interesting style nor is it often well animated!
For a while everything looked like Steven Universe/Adventure Time (CalArts). There was a couple of decades where Hanna Barbera single-handedly diminished the entire art form with the sheer volume of their minimally animated dogshit.
I actually kind of like the CalArts style, but I also understand how overused it was, which was unfortunate. I’m glad we’re turning a corner and folks like Joe Bennett are getting their time in the sun.
I love his big-headed almost hyperrealistic Chibi style in Common Side Effects.

The only issue we have with ‘eastern’ animation is that anime is often treated as a genre rather than a medium which leads to it becoming very tropey and problematic. Though the latter point may ‘just’ be because of the politics of Japan.
While I agree with the sentiment - that’s nearly pebble yeet-level of labelling for a comic. Maybe just have SpongeBob finger Ash or something like that
I think Shen chose to make it ambiguous to both allow people to see what they want and avoid people getting upset about “much childhood” or being antigay etc. Also, Ash is a child. He should finger Alucard or something.
