GPU death incoming. Happened on my ASUS laptop.

Those artifacts might be cause by gpu overheating. Can you provide more details of the computer? Check that you have good airflow. What temperatures are you seeing?

Nvidia 1080, how do I install a temp monitor in bazzite? I see nothing in the bazaar, otherwise this is a good airflow PC that’s mostly been used for streaming since install, I would more likely attribute it to the weird closed source drivers I had to find to actually get the card to work. But yeah I def wanna check on the temps now just in case

Edit: I’m sitting nice and pretty at 60⁰c, thankfully this is looking to be just a poor install on my part

        Uh oh.

Bazzite should use these by default. If you had to install anything Nvidia, you mind as well wipe and start from scratch (or just try a different distro), as you have messed with the system Nvidia configs now.

…What prompted you to do that, specifically? Again, Bazzite is a gaming distro, right? So it should just do this.

A bunch of Linux nerds from last time I had an issue. Apparently this is a known issue on some older cards.

I do see one possible mistep though. When I was choosing a flavor of bazzite I selected Nvidia RTX series, which I believe the 1080 is not part of, I should have chosen legacy version for my install

            Yyyyep. That was it, precisely.

                Good!

Also, as a word of advice, when a bunch of linux forum folks tell you to do a bunch of manual stuff, don’t listen to them.

It’s always best to get fixes from your distro (or some package manager) first, where everything is integrated with the system and preconfigured and updated so you don’t have to maintain it yourself over time. Like, for example, picking the legacy drivers from your distro instead of trying a manual install. I cannot emphasize this enough; it was a common mistake I made with linux early on.

I mean, not everything can be perfect, but its very easy to break the system and go down long maintenance rabbit holes.

I will say, I’ve noticed it’s smart to treat Linux communities like specialty pet communities. You can follow the"general logic" but every now and when someones going to tell you your a bad pet owner if you don’t rub your guinea pig in coconut oil every week

This is the big temptation with Linux. It’s open source, and there’s a lot of information out there, so maybe technically you can fix XYZ…

…but, realistically, it’s often better to just use supported hardware, or use a distro that supports your hardware.

sometimes you can get a “quick fix” from a github repo or some such, and it’ll just work. …but, it’s so easy for a quick fix to turn into a rabbit hole of many hours, or even many days.

…and if you’re doing that, you’ve got to be into it for the journey more than the destination.

If you installed the NVIDIA proprietary drivers, you should have the nvidia-settings (GUI) and nvidia-smi (command line) tools installed already. They should be able to tell you the GPU temperature, fan speed, etc.

Edit: At least, that’s been the case on all the Linux systems I’ve had NVIDIA proprietary drivers on in the past.

Sounds like you worked it out. I also had some issues with my older card and found that installing the gnome version helped. Not sure why KDE is fine with my 3080 but for the 1080 that just would not fly. I couldnt even get to the desktop, after login it was just a blank screen. Just a heads up in case you or anyone else has more issues.

Double check your display connections as well. I’ve had weird artifacting before when my HDMI was accidentally knocked a bit loose by my cat
