Bridges are one of the reasons Matrix is called Matrix: let’s matrix all the networks together! They are key to onboard new users into the network. However, maintaining and operating bridges, in particular to closed, proprietary platforms, is expensive: they need to be kept up to date with any change made by the platform on a regular basis and they’re fiddly to keep up and running.
Has the funding situation of matrix not improved with EU countries make use of it due to sovereignty issues? If you have to stop development of a bridge to one of the biggest proprietary chat systems out there, it doesn’t speak well of your financial situation.
Matrix Foundation doesn’t get anything from those deals as they are signed with various Element for-profit entities.
Te forprofit entities don’t share the profits? That sucks!
At least they started with the most intense proprietary one I guess. I totally understand that this is taking immense manpower to keep going, but it’s still sad to see one go.
The mautrix bridge is way better anyway tbh
