Why use “ist” in one but not the other?

    To add on to the response: The verb corresponding to “bewölkt” is “sich bewölken”.

    So you could say

    “Der Himmel bewölkt sich.” = The sky is getting cloudy.

    or

    “Es bewölkt sich.” = It is getting cloudy.
