I would like to know if anyone else remembers this being a “thing” for a while, at least in the USA (probably still is tbh): but for a while I remember people (mostly men tbh) joking about how if someone else is in the bathroom they will run the water for a bit without washing their hands, just standing by the sink so that other people in the bathroom think that they washed their hands. God forbid they actually wash their hands though. Thought this was dumb and disgusting but multiple unrelated groups of people in my life have publicly announced that they do this.

My informal polling (using public men’s restrooms) suggests American Men wash hands at or below the Dutch rate

Interested to know if this is based on self reports, because I don’t imagine most people who don’t wash their hands would admit it if asked.
