Cults often double down when their prophesies fail to come to pass, modifying or reinterpreting them or whatever. People can only abandon a load-bearing belief, or the social circle that comes with sharing that belief, when they have the ability to stand without it

Even pretty obvious hints can be hidden in plain sight if the red herrings are interesting and well-thought-out enough in their own right. It’s also fun for the reader to pursue false leads and have a chance to see ahead of time that they don’t offer an adequate explanation.

It did very poorly in the box office back when it came out, though I don’t know how much money it has made since as the cult classic it became.

There was also an anime adaptation called Scott Pilgrim Takes Off which takes the story in a very different direction, that came out a year and a half ago.

Also Micheal Cera wasn’t right to play Scott, who was often filled with oblivious confidence and charm instead of Micheal Cera awkwardness in the books, but I imagine he was selected because he was the most high-profile young male Canadian comedic actor at the time
