CachyOS is the best Linux experience I’ve ever had. I used to use Mint too but it had problems with my new hardware. I was hesitant because people always say Arch distros are hard to learn but what I don’t see mentioned is how much better they actually run. I’ve had zero problems so far, and that’s more than I can say for Windows 11 lol.

I’ve been doing this in command prompt:

reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OOBE /v BypassNRO /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

shutdown/r /t 0

After reboot it lets you choose “I don’t have internet” and you can continue with creating a local account.

Seems about 40% working, I personally only have one game that doesn’t jive with Linux. If the game you’re playing doesn’t work that’s the fault of the specific anti-cheat developers because it’s obviously possible to do it right.

This is why I just burp into the phone until I know I’m talking to a real person.

Every few years I’ll look for something on craigslist and every time I’m amazed that it’s still going strong and it’s still exactly the same.

The article said the frame rates are more stable under bazzite with windows fluctuating a lot more even at low power settings.

I read through that thread you linked and I didn’t see bazzite mentioned anywhere.

I have a spare drive with windows so I can play Battlefield 6, literally everything else I need or want works great on Linux. I’m hoping the anti cheat developers get more on board soon, maybe they’ll catch on after windows shits itself a couple more times due to the spaghettified AI code. I currently can’t get into recovery mode because Microsoft borked it with their last patch lmao.

Everyone hypes Mint but if you’re working with newish hardware you might have a bad time due to the drivers taking a while to mature and filter down through all the distros. If her rig is a couple years old it should work just fine though. I would also suggest trying out Kubuntu, Pop!_OS, PikaOS, and Zorin if that is the case.

If she is on brand new hardware then something Arch based is the way to go IMO. CachyOS, Garuda, and EndeavorOS are all Arch based distros that make setup easy and they’ve all worked great for me out of the box. Honestly if you have snapshots configured with timeshift or something being on a rolling distro isn’t as scary as it’s made out to be. Fedora is an option too as they get updates every 6 months, but there is a little extra setup to do after install like media codecs and proprietary drivers etc.

Cachyos was my personal pick and it’s working perfect for me so far.

That book was a fun read.
