Thank you for bringing these accounts to my attention. I’ve banned all seven users you identified and have temporarily enabled application mode for new registrations while we review our processes.
I want to be clear: we take spam seriously and are not a “spam instance.” We respond to all reports within 24 hours and actively moderate our community. However, Lemmy’s current toolset provides limited visibility into user registrations(such as no user list within the admin panel) and activities until they’re reported, which creates challenges for proactive moderation. While I appreciate you flagging these accounts, I disagree with your characterization that we “shouldn’t be running an instance” without stricter controls. Open registration has been an important part of growing the Australian Lemmy community, and we’ve successfully managed it with reactive moderation until now. That said, we’re always looking to improve.
Moving forward, we’re:
We’re committed to being good citizens of the fediverse while maintaining a balance between openness and security. If you notice future issues, please feel free to report them through the proper channels, and we’ll address them promptly as we always do.
