  • While that is a scary possibility, in practice it would be hard to pull off a blackout of that kind. Legislators can pass as many regulations as they want, and corporations will do the bare minimum because it’s not in their interest to shrink their customer base and ad views. There is a contradiction between the desires of the state and the desires of industry that I kinda doubt will end up in favor of the state very long, if ever. The economy always comes first even when it undermines geopolitical or propaganda goals.

  • If you want to see non-USA content then feel free to post it. Though you’re also free to block the comm, that’s fine too.

To the extent that electoralism matters at all though, LA is significant on a global scale, having a population of 4 million in the city proper and 18 million in the greater metro area. It’s not like this is some Nate Silver micro-analysis about some random town in Iowa ahead of Super Tuesday (if that sounds like gibberish, then my point is doubly made)

It would also be significant if a DSA tide does happen after Mamdani, so this story has more of a national relevance than LA in isolation.

  • The Syria activism and Dubai wedding, not justifiable. Though I honestly do leave space for someone to have been a clueless liberal in their past. I think that most people on this site have themselves grown up in relatively privileged circumstances, if only in consequence of living in the insulated Western world.

I could forgive her if she publicly acknowledged her former liberalism, the insufficiency of her activism in the wake of what happened in Syria.

However. The Mamdanis being trust fund kids doesn’t per se disqualify them, if they genuinely devote themselves to the cause of the working class. Class collaboration has to be accepted when it benefits the working class. It’s good to be skeptical about their background though, and of course factor it together with the totality their present-day views and actions.

  • Many scientific facts, which today are almost trite, hail from only the past 50-75 years. One example is DNA — we made it through the second world war without the modern genetic theory.

The Voyager spacecrafts are another contribution. We didn’t know much of anything about the outer planets until the 1970s. Even today, if I’m not mistaken, the only close-up images of Neptune are from Voyager 2 in the late 1980s. If it weren’t for the Voyagers, those planets would still be blurry concepts.
