The New York Times’ opinion page is freakishly good at being wrong about everything ever.

You build a dam to hold back progress and then demand gratitude for the trickle that slips through it

And smug about it too. When I’m wrong I don’t triple down on it and be like “heh, well, ACTUALLY” smuglord

In the same vein 1913 was the best year for the Russian Empire (before it went down the drain).

I love the “x number of people gained access to water” arguments where they point out the peripheral good done by the system and/or the general spread of modern industrial comforts/tech over time.

Which they do to distract you from all the intentional bad things that get done

Look at how capable they are to take credit for these achievements and how incapable they are of understanding social murder. They could if they tried. They can get out the fine-tooth comb to count exactly how many people logged onto the fucking internet for the first time. But they choose not to with the negative externalities. Those are just bad luck. There’s nobody to hold responsible if it’s just bad luck.

Poverty is like bad weather, with many victims and no perpetrator. Unless it’s in a socialist state, in which case there is a perpetrator.

Yes congrats, children aren’t dying as much as before indoor plumbing and medicine. Is that- that the best you have? Be grateful you don’t have to shit outside and get vaccinated?

I wonder how much of this was because of China’s anti-poverty programs.

Almost all of it. If you take out growth in countries that were under a Socialist government at the time, most metrics like HDI and life expectancy have basically been plateaued for the last 100 years, with very small, gradual gains.

A huge amount. The goal was to eliminate extreme poverty by 2020 and for the last few years before then China made a big push and completed their goal a little early.

ah, you may feel hardship, may bare witness to man-made horror and atrocity, but have you considered thinking about it in geologic time?

Thank you for specifying the publication date as I can easily see the NYT having run this title in 2025, or 2024, or 2020
