When you said “gimmick”, I honestly assumed you were thinking of something like Klefki, which is basically an object with a fae tie-in, putting it somewhat ahead of Magnemite’s concept (I like both, to be clear). What did you have in mind by gimmick? Like Porygon or Ditto? (two of my favorites)
As an aside, I’d probably make another carve-out for Yokai and Yokai-like creatures, which would be good for Jynx except that her design is kind of lame for other reasons.

Pokemon designs have never been good
Even the originals were just semi-random animals and objects turned into “monsters” and they looked weird. They got anime-fied to be cuter later. And they have only gotten increasingly more abstract and dumb. New switch pokemon had ones that turned into motorcycles.

The real DEI was when they let some woke artist design dragonite after stealing it right out of the hands of based Atsuko Nishida (who designed dratini and dragonair)

Nah that was just someone unfamiliar with eastern mythology. In Chinese (and later Japanese) mythology, there are serpentine dragons who come from humble carp/koi who possess the determination to swim up a waterfall.

Serperior was good with a technically illegal moveset in B2W2. It’s hidden ability Contrary + Leaf Storm was really busted, the issue being that for official tournaments, Contrary wasn’t available on Serperior until after the last official tournament of Gen V was over. In Smogon (smdh) it was alright but obviously wasn’t going to compete in Ubers.
Sceptile was screwed by the physical/special split.
Serperior though is actually really fun design.
Venusaur has been competive for a while at least!
