I have decided for my mental health to take a break from Lemmy and go touch grass instead. I enjoy my time here, but it is taking away from things I should be doing, and things I want to do. I find myself doomscrolling for hours on here and I know that’s not healthy.
So I am going go finish reading a lot of books.
Going finishing writing a lot of books.
And going start going on long walks.
Starting a new job Monday and it will be work from home. I am excited and nervous, but ready for the new chapter of my life. And I need to do something productive and unplug for a few weeks from all the negative shit going on in the world.
Besides October is coming up soon my favorite time of the year, so want to enjoy the real world for a bit and hop off social media. I’ll be back but hopefully I can do better than scrolling for hours on end.
Hope you all have great rest of the month, and also a wonderful Halloween.
How tf do you find content to be doom-scrolling lemmy all day?
I browse it once in the morning and after my breakfast I can consider all the content as checked. That said, this is why we need the normies and the artists (YES, even the ones who draw porn), lemmy content is basically news and reactions (like comic-strips, images or videos) to the news, it still lacks variety
It’s always a good idea to back off and focus on yourself. Having checked your comments it does seem you’ve been riled up by all the bad media, recently. Been there.
Having said that, maybe its a good idea to start blocking all the keywords that make you sad, and look for an instance other than lemmy.world and lemmy.ml? They’re well known to be the worst instances because the owners are trigger-happy fascists (Dessalines specifically but I can’t remember which one they’re from), and often are the source of unsavoury content or treatment.
Piefed and Blåhaj are the top two in terms of community and instance ownership.
I’m proud of you for making this choice. It takes strength to recognise when you’re getting into harmful patterns, and take action to correct that.
I actually like Lemmy for the fact there isn’t an infinite amount of content like on Reddit. After about 20-30 minutes on here I find myself seeing the same content coming up again and again and then there’s no interest in altering on here. That’s good for me because this is my only form of social media.
Me too! I’ve realized I don’t need endless posts with a thousand comments each.
Have you done work from home before? I’ve been doing it a looooong time, so if you want to hear any of my tips or mistakes, let me know.
I would love to hear some tips and mistakes, please. Some people seem to love working from home while others just can’t get the hang of it.
100% remote worker here as well. If there’s no magazine/group/whateveritscalled for us we should have one
I’m on it, give me a few.
e: [email protected] - just made it so you’ll have to search for it, but it’s there.
Remote workers of the world, unite! (But you have to put on pants first, sorry.)
I never got the whole sloppy work from home vibe.
I mainly wore jeans but I always got fully dressed, hair fancy, cologne and deodorant, no different from going to an office.
I have a desk that is for work only. In stay there most of the day doing work (snacks excepted). When the day is over, I walk away.
I suppose some struggle with the temptations of home, but I always felt comfortable. Yes, leave some goof off time here and there, play with the cats, have a luxurious BM, but get your stuff done.
I never worked from the sofa, nor did I watch TV or movies from any screen. Lunchtime walks were good (and more snacks).
Ill be on camera and need to dress professionally. They also provide all the equipment.
No deal
In case you missed it, I just created [email protected] and posted there.
I don’t see any posts there at all, yet. Is my reader broken?
I put in a “hello world” post just now.
Your link is for a user (/u/) as opposed to a community (i. e., /c/[email protected]).
It is. I’ll fix it.
I’m definitely in the latter category: working from home during the lockdowns and after I (mostly) wasn’t very productive and I felt very socially isolated. I felt like “the odd one out” in the group -even when I was doing what was expected of me. Removing the social interactions of the workplace weighted heavily on me, and I got back to in person work as quickly as i could.
Great idea, give yourself a break for a bit. Doomscrolling isn’t good for us and it can get overwhelming. Have you thought about blocking comms, or only subscribing to safe comes like [email protected] [email protected] etc?
Yes, I totally support this idea, go get 'em, tiger!
Social media and even open source decentralized social media is fun, but taking breaks is healthy too. There’s so much to do and see in life, that sometimes you just have to change your routine to realize the opportunity. Have fun, and you’re welcome back whenever.
Good luck with the new job!
