I do understand the impulse to “throw it back at them” and I won’t pretend that cis people experience zero harm from being misgendered - many will be rightfully angry or upset, but the attack has a blast radius radius that impacts marginalized groups that experience far more harm from it, rather than protecting them in the process.

What I hear is “my willingness to respect your [lack of] gender is dependent on your behavior” and it still just sounds like transphobia to me. There are shitty trans people, that doesn’t mean you don’t respect their pronouns. There are shitty cis people, don’t misgender them either.

Setting aside the fact that the ruling seems to try to address “retaliatory misgendering of cis people” and treat it as more problematic than misgendering trans people, it’s a shitty thing to misgender people no matter what.

I’m not really on speaking terms with gender, but I don’t think that gives me any right to un-gender someone who has expressed a desire to be gendered in a particular way.

The code itself, while useful, is probably less useful than the archived data. Unless each copy has both, and new snapshots can somehow be shared between them, it’s still a pretty massive loss.

Have you considered having your pronoun choices reflect that? People do take (mis)gendering seriously here, but it’s hard for people to get it right when your tags suggest that masculine terms are also fine.

I assumed it was based on the timing alone, and as someone who was vocally in favor of merging them, I think it’s an awesome solution. I really hope the people who were opposed to merging like the approach too.

• it IMO removes the need to try to draw lines between what content belongs where by:
  • not being limited to “public figure slop”, while not disallowing it - there are plenty of cases a post could go in both or either without being the “wrong” comm
  • being broader than slop content, it redefines the focus in a way that may still have some overlap, but is distinct and allows content that didn’t really have a dedicated comm elsewhere

I won’t deny that a lack of clarification plays a role, but the way I phrased that perhaps overemphasized time. I do get that time zones exist, but it’s more that as I continued to think about it, it got harder for me to rationalize it as a mistake. That’s hopefully just that I’m catastrophizing things and that the various cues that I think should have been obvious are less apparent to other people.

Yep, getting it right the first time is the only part that left me questioning the second time, but there’s more than enough clues that my faith in it being an accident has been steadily decreasing with time.
